The useful distinction
6DoF stands for six degrees of freedom — three for position (left–right, up–down, forward–back) and three for rotation (tilting your head up and down, turning it side to side, leaning it left and right). A 360° video only gives you the rotation half: you stand on one fixed point and look around while time plays, but step forward and nothing changes — the camera position stays exactly where it was.

6DoF video
Depth-aware frames let you lean, step and change height within the captured space. The action keeps its timing while your viewpoint shifts.
Real 6DoF video allows both at once: looking around and moving, while the scene keeps playing. That's a harder problem than a 6DoF photo. For a still object, one camera taking many photos from different angles over time is enough — nothing moves between shots. A video scene, by contrast, never holds still, so it takes an array of multiple synchronized cameras surrounding the action, all capturing the same instant from many angles at once. From that footage, techniques like volumetric reconstruction or Gaussian splatting compute a walkable 3D space for every moment of the scene, not just a single frozen one.
Movement and detail are limited to the camera perspectives captured in sync and the area they cover; areas that were not captured or were occluded cannot be reconstructed reliably.
The result is most immersive in a VR or AR headset with positional tracking — but it's already interactive on an ordinary screen, just by dragging or panning.
